Last month, Congresswoman Nita Lowey honored at her annual Service Academy Recognition Ceremony the 29 students from Westchester and Rockland counties she nominated for admission to our nation’s service academies – U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), and the U.S. Naval Academy.
The nominees come from many communities in the 17th Congressional District, across Westchester and Rockland. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the ceremony was held virtually. In the wake of Memorial Day, Congresswoman Lowey began by honoring with a moment of silence the veterans who had made the ultimate sacrifice and those who died of the coronavirus.
“Nominating outstanding young people to pursue higher education at our service academies has been a highlight of my 32-year career in the Congress,” said Congresswoman Lowey. “I am honored to recognize the fine young men and women who will undoubtedly be leaders of the next generation, and I am humbled by their commitment to serving our nation.”
The Congresswoman is noted her work fighting for servicemembers and veterans in recent years. In May, as the Chair on the House Appropriations Committee, she introduced the HEROES Act, which has passed in the House and includes provisions for help and support to nurses and other health-care providers at veterans’ hospitals. Additionally, in 2019 she helped secure a raise in military wages. Congresswoman Lowey commended the distinguished students and wished them luck in their future endeavors.
