As New Rochelle joins communities across the nation in commemorating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the City is bringing history to life through Revolution on the Sound!, a series of immersive experiences and special events for residents and visitors.
A highlight of the celebration will be the visit of the tall ship Lynx, a replica of a historic privateer ship. The City of New Rochelle, through its America’s 250 Committee and Department of Parks and Recreation/New Rochelle Municipal Marina, is partnering with Revolutionary Westchester 250 (RW250) to bring the ship to New Rochelle.
Public tours of the Lynx will take place on Saturday, October 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the New Rochelle Municipal Marina. Free parking will be available at Hudson Park, where free tickets for the ship tours will also be distributed.
In addition to the ship tours, Hudson Park will be transformed into a mini festival of history, featuring reenactors portraying pivotal figures such as General William Howe and Marbleheader John Glover. The event will also include live music, colonial games from Philips Manor Hall Historic Site, and booths featuring local history and information about the American Revolution.
“Stepping aboard the tall ship Lynx is like stepping back into the past,” said Barbara Davis, New Rochelle City Historian and Executive Director of the Westchester County Historical Society. “The experience will be heightened by encounters with reenactors representing key figures in the Revolutionary War events that took place right here in our own backyard 250 years ago.”
RW250’s Revolution on the Sound! programming will continue throughout the month with additional events. These include a “Toast 250 Tavern Night” on October 14, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at Kenny’s on the Water, 2 Pelham Road, New Rochelle, and a full reenactment of the Battle of Pell’s Point/Pelham on October 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with viewing available at Orchard Beach.
The City of New Rochelle encourages residents and visitors to take part in these special events celebrating the city’s important place in the history of the American Revolution.
