Recruitment Office Opens September 25 as City Seeks a New Generation of Firefighters, Including Women and Minority Candidates

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and Fire Commissioner William Fitzpatrick today announced recruitment for its 2026-2027 Firefighter Examination, inviting qualified candidates to take the next step toward a career protecting the people of Yonkers.
“Yonkers is a diverse city, and our Fire Department should reflect the people who call this city home,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “We want women and minority candidates to see a career in fire service as an opportunity to make a difference in their community and build a future. If you’ve ever thought about becoming a firefighter, now is the time to answer the call.”
The Firefighter Recruitment Office at the Yonkers Riverfront Library opened Friday, and applications will be accepted through Thursday, November 25, 2026. The written examination will be held Saturday, January 9, 2027, with physical agility test dates to be announced for qualified candidates.
“We are looking for people who are ready to learn, ready to serve and ready to become among the best trained firefighters in the region,” said Yonkers Fire Commissioner William Fitzpatrick. “We have invested in new apparatus, upgraded technology and specialized equipment, and we continue to train our firefighters to the highest standards. Better prepared firefighters make our community safer.”
Free training sessions are available to help candidates prepare for the written examination, including test-taking techniques and sample questions. Candidates can contact the Firefighter Recruitment Office for information about upcoming sessions.
In the past two years, the City of Yonkers has invested in 8 new rescue pumpers and three ATVs. Select firefighters were also part of a statewide Urban Search and Rescue Training, to be a part of a larger team when called upon, for major incidents across New York.
All applicants must pass both a written and physical examination, with each counting equally toward a candidate’s total score. Qualified candidates will also be required to undergo a medical examination.
