Plus One for America mails 900 personalized letters to Rockland County residents, with more on the way
Moving comes with a long list of address changes. Plus One for America wants new homeowners in New York’s 17th Congressional District to remember one more: their voter registration.
Through its Just Moved In project, the grassroots group is sending welcome letters that introduce recent home buyers to their new communities. Each letter includes a personalized summary of the recipient’s voting districts and elected representatives, along with steps to register or update their address to vote.
Volunteers prepared and mailed the first 900 letters to new homeowners in Rockland County. Plus One plans additional mailings to Westchester County.
“Moving is one of those moments when people are getting to know a place and deciding how they want to be part of it,” said Emily Simoness, Founder of Plus One for America. “We wanted to make the civic side of that easier. A letter that tells you who represents you and how to get registered is a small welcome, but it can be the start of a real connection to your new community.”
NY-17 stretches across the Hudson River, encompassing Rockland and Putnam counties and parts of Westchester and Dutchess. For someone who has just moved, even figuring out which districts and representatives serve a new address can take some work. Just Moved In puts that information in one place as residents prepare for the November 3 election. New York’s voter registration deadline for that election is October 24.
The mailing is part of Plus One’s broader effort to bring neighbors together across NY-17. Since February, more than 1,000 people have taken part in its 57 Dinners gatherings, hosted by neighbors in communities throughout the district. The next round takes place October 24. Plus One is also organizing Tie-Dye 4 NY, a community event on October 10, and a second volunteer session to prepare Just Moved In letters on October 2.
