The Mount Vernon Public Library is excited to announce the official kickoff of its Bike Borrow Program, making history as the first public library in Westchester County to offer free bicycle borrowing to library cardholders.
The celebratory kickoff event was held on July 29 at the Mount Vernon Public Library, 28 South First Avenue, Mount Vernon.
The innovative Bike Borrow Program expands the library’s mission of providing free access to resources that enrich lives and strengthen the community. Through the program, patrons with a valid Mount Vernon Public Library card will be able to borrow bicycles at no cost, encouraging healthy living, recreation, sustainable transportation, and greater access to the community.
“This program represents another exciting way the Mount Vernon Public Library continues to redefine what a library can be,” said Dr. Timur Davis, Library Director. “We are proud to be the first library in Westchester County to offer this unique service, providing residents with greater opportunities to stay active, explore their community, and enjoy the many benefits of cycling—all free with a library card.”
The Bike Borrow Program is designed to promote wellness, environmental sustainability, and equitable access to recreation and transportation while continuing the library’s commitment to innovative community programming.
The success of the Bike Borrow Program is made possible through the valued partnership of the Inner City Fund (ICF) and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). Their commitment to expanding equitable transportation opportunities and encouraging active, healthy lifestyles has helped make this groundbreaking initiative a reality. Together, these organizations and the Mount Vernon Public Library are demonstrating how innovative partnerships can create meaningful opportunities that enhance mobility, recreation, and quality of life for residents of all ages.
