Its creator, known by the name Satoshi Nakamoto, released Bitcoin in 2009 after the 2008 financial crisis exposed weaknesses in the traditional banking system. The goal was to give people another way to move value across the internet without depending on a single organization. 

For example, someone in the United States can send funds to a family member overseas without waiting for a bank to approve the transaction.

Understanding the blockchain: Bitcoin’s digital ledger

Every transaction appears on a blockchain, which works like a shared digital record book. Rather than storing records in one location, thousands of copies exist across the network, making it difficult for anyone to alter past entries.

Each group of transactions forms a block that connects to the previous one using cryptography. That chain creates a complete history that anyone can inspect. If someone tried to change an earlier record, they would also need to rewrite every block that followed while convincing the rest of the network to accept the changes, which is practically impossible.

How transactions are verified through mining

Mining keeps the network honest. Specialized computers compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles, and the first successful miner earns the right to add the next block of verified transactions to the blockchain.

This process, called proof-of-work, requires substantial computing power and electricity. That cost discourages fraud because changing transaction records would demand enormous resources.
