With dangerously high temperatures expected over the next several days, the City of Yonkers is urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves from extreme heat and reminding the public of the cooling resources available throughout the City.
“Summer is meant to be enjoyed, and we want everyone to have a fun and memorable July 4th weekend,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “But with extreme heat in the forecast, it’s important to make safety part of your plans. Stay hydrated, take breaks from the sun, look out for one another, and use the City’s cooling centers and parks with sprinklers whenever you need to cool down.”
Residents seeking relief from the heat can visit one of Yonkers’ four parks equipped with water sprinklers:
- H. Boo Wilson Park (Tuckahoe Road and Runyon Avenue)
- Joseph Pickett Memorial Park (230 Hawthorne Avenue)
- Georgia Park (1482 Georgia Avenue)
- Joseph Cerrato Park (80 Jefferson Street)
Joseph Pickett Memorial Park, which reopened following a major renovation in 2025, features one of the City’s newest splash areas.
“We want everyone to enjoy our parks safely this summer,” said City of Yonkers Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation Commissioner Steve Sansone. “Our parks provide a place for families to cool off during the hottest days of the year, and we encourage residents to use them, along with the City’s other cooling resources, while temperatures remain dangerously high.”
Sprinklers are open daily from noon to 8:00 p.m. through Labor Day.
Residents are also encouraged to seek relief from the heat at the City’s designated cooling centers, including libraries, senior centers, and community centers, during normal operating hours.
