Breaking into the housing market is a challenge for first-time homebuyers. From bidding wars to mortgage approvals to raising the money for a downpayment.
According to new data from Realtor.com, a record number of the nation’s young adults were living with their parents last year as high housing costs pushed the milestone of independent living out of reach. A third of young adults between the ages of 25 and 35 – 25.2 million people – were living with their parents in 2025.
In light of this significant trend, Community Housing Innovations, a nonprofit dedicated to housing solutions, wants to help first time homebuyers by offering practical and financial assistance at its 2026 Homeownership Expo at the Sonesta Hotel in White Plains on Saturday, June 27 from 11 am to 3 pm. Prospective homeowners or those who already own a home but are at risk of losing it, can get advice from bankers, realtors, government agencies, mortgage companies, and others on everything they need to know to successfully own or keep a home.
“June is national homeownership month. This expo is a must for anyone looking to break into the housing market. Owning a home is one of the most important steps to building generational wealth,’’ said Ron Abad, CEO of Community Housing Innovations. “This is our second year bringing together experts from across the board with valuable, practical advice to help those buyers looking to break into the market.”
Buyers like Janet Lopez, a New York City Firefighter and EMT, who was able to finally realize her dream of homeownership through CHI’s Homeownership Grant program. The Bronx native, single mom, and first in her family to graduate from college, had been working toward her goal for more than eight years.
