Two of the oldest Black organizations in the City of Yonkers are coming together this Juneteenth to celebrate freedom, history, and community through a special event designed to educate, inspire, and give back.
The Luther V. Garrison Sr. Masonic Foundation, James H. Farrell Lodge #34, Messiah Baptist Church, and The Yonkers African American Committee will host a free community Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Messiah Baptist Church, located at 76 Warburton Avenue in Yonkers.
The event highlights a historic partnership between Messiah Baptist Church, which is celebrating 152 years of service, and James H. Farrell Lodge #34, which is marking 150 years of brotherhood and community leadership. Organizers say the celebration is intended to bring together residents of all ages for fellowship, learning, and reflection.
Guests will enjoy a complimentary community breakfast while taking part in educational presentations, storytelling, music, and discussions focused on African American history and the lasting contributions of Black residents in Yonkers and beyond. Featured presenters include Yonkers historian Mary Hoar, who will discuss “First Blacks of Note in the City of Yonkers,” and Ken Davis, who will share the history of Yonkers’ first three Black police officers. Additional participants include Richard Crews, King Lagee, Subomi Macaulay, Symra Brandon, and Pastor Frank E. Coleman Jr.
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States and serves as a celebration of Black freedom, resilience, achievement, and culture. Community members, families, and local leaders are encouraged to attend this free event honoring the past while strengthening community ties for the future.
