Stepinac Hoops Star Named McDonald’s All-American

Stepinac High School Guard R J Davis

R.J. Davis of Archbishop Stepinac High School will join the ranks of high school basketball’s elite legacy as part of the prestigious 2020 McDonald’s All-American Boys’ East Team in Houston on April 1.

Davis is the first player hailing from Stepinac to receive this honor in the game’s 43-year history and will be recognized with a special jersey presentation during a ceremony and press conference Thursday, Feb. 13 at 9:30 a.m. in the Stepinac gymnasium.

Davis will compete alongside 23 other top male high school basketball players throughout the U.S. He has been a stand-out player this season, averaging 27.3 points per game, 7.7 rebounds per game, 5 assists per game and 2.3 steals per game, and currently leads the Crusaders to a 12-6 record and national ranking.

He is set to attend the University of North Carolina next season.

Davis is the son of Robert and Venessa Davis from Greenburgh. His high school coach is Patrick Massaroni (Class of 2006).

ESPN2 and ESPN will telecast the McDonald’s All-American Game live. The 19th annual girls’ game will air on ESPN2 at 5 p.m., and the 43rd annual boys’ game immediately follows on ESPN at 7 p.m. Tickets are available through the Toyota Center box office.

“This is an unbelievable honor for R.J., his family and the Stepinac basketball program,” said Massaroni. “R.J. has worked extremely hard on and off the court to make this possible.”

Davis now ranks among an impressive list of notable basketball players who have also donned the McDonald’s All American jersey, including Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, James Harden, Candace Parker, Maya Moore, Elena Delle Donne, Skylar Diggins and Breanna Stewart.

The McDonald’s All-American Games celebrate the nation’s top athletes as they take their first steps toward basketball greatness, while also strengthening relationship ties with communities across the country.
