The Yonkers Historical Society was founded in 1952, with early incarnations dating back to 1877. It is dedicated to preserving the rich and deep history of the City of Yonkers, NY. We are patrons of an extensive archive of local history and also preservers of the historic Sherwood House Museum, one of the oldest buildings in Westchester County and a National Historic Landmark.
With its ongoing effort to maintain Sherwood House, the Yonkers Historical Society has recently completed restoration work on two major projects, including the roof and one facade of the building. In 2026, the Society plans to restore the iconic two-level porch to historical accuracy.
All work is made possible by grants that are sponsored by the City of Yonkers, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and by generous donations of members and friends of the Yonkers Historical Society. With your continued support, these projects become possible to take on.

To celebrate the 250th, Westchester Library System has chosen The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams as the inaugural title for “One County, One Read,” a series designed to foster community through a shared reading experience. Written by Pulitzer Prize winner Stacy Schiff, the 2023 bio “illuminates Adams’ transformation from aimless son of a well-off family to tireless, beguiling radical who mobilized the colonies.” There’s still plenty of time to pick up or download a copy before April 25, when Schiff will appear in conversation with local news anchor and historical novelist Mary Calvi at the Grinton I. Will Library in Yonkers. While you’re there, pick up RW250’s free map that highlights Revolutionary War sites throughout Westchester County.
