5 Favorites for the NBA Championship

The NBA championship race has started to sharpen as the regular season moves toward its final stretch. Futures markets currently place the Oklahoma City Thunder at the top, followed by the Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, and Cleveland Cavaliers. Those five teams sit at the front of the board because they combine star power, recent results, and the kind of form that usually carries into the postseason.

Key dates in the NBA calendar also add context to the race ahead. The regular season concludes in April, followed by the play-in tournament from April 14 to April 17 and the start of the playoffs on April 18. Yahoo reports that the Finals are scheduled to begin on June 3, with a potential Game 7 set for June 19, creating a clear timeline for contenders to peak at the right moment. These dates highlight how little time remains for teams to build momentum before the postseason begins.

1. Oklahoma City Thunder

Oklahoma City enters this list as the clear favorite. The Thunder have been playing with the confidence of a team that expects to make a long playoff run, and their recent results support that view. They beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 116-103, edged the Boston Celtics 104-102, and beat the Denver Nuggets 129-126 in one of the strongest wins by any contender this month.

Their past form explains why the sports betting market rates them so highly in their upcoming matches. Solaire sports betting puts them as the clear favorites against the Orlando Magic despite playing away, with odds of 1.23 against 4.33. These odds from a leading sportsbook show how strongly the team is playing and why they are top contenders.

As Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to lead the team at an elite level, Oklahoma City has shown it can win close games as well as control quality opponents over four quarters. The Thunder also carries strong momentum, with Reuters noting an eight-game winning streak before their next matchup with Orlando. That kind of rhythm matters in late March and early April.

2. Boston Celtics

Boston remains one of the most credible title threats in the league. The Celtics have the experience, depth, and shot-making that define serious contenders, and their most recent stretch has kept them near the top of the Eastern Conference. Their last three results include a 120-112 win over the Phoenix Suns, a 111-100 win over the Washington Wizards, and a 104-102 loss to the Thunder.

The Celtics are a favorite because they can win in multiple ways. Jaylen Brown’s 41-point performance against Phoenix showed how dangerous Boston can be when its wings take over a game, while the win over Washington showed the value of depth and rebounding. Even the narrow defeat against Oklahoma City confirmed that Boston can go shot-for-shot with the favorite. That combination keeps the Celtics firmly in the championship picture.

3. San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio has surged into the top tier of the futures market thanks to one of the best runs in the league. The Spurs’ last three games brought a 119-115 win over the Los Angeles Clippers, a 115-102 win over the Charlotte Hornets, and a 136-131 loss to the Denver Nuggets. Reuters also reported that the Clippers’ win improved San Antonio to 18-2 since February, which explains why bookmakers have moved them so high.

Victor Wembanyama sits at the center of that rise. His two-way impact, together with strong contributions from De’Aaron Fox, Devin Vassell, and Stephon Castle, has given the Spurs a balanced profile. The loss to Denver showed they can compete with another contender at a high level, while the wins over Charlotte and the Clippers showed control, depth, and composure. San Antonio’s current form makes them a legitimate title favorite.

4. Denver Nuggets

Denver remains close to the top because the roster still has championship-level talent and enough star quality to beat anyone in a seven-game series. Their last three results were a 127-125 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, a 136-131 win over the Spurs, and a 129-126 loss to the Thunder.

Nikola Jokić continues to anchor everything Denver does, and Jamal Murray’s 39-point effort against San Antonio showed why the Nuggets remain dangerous when both stars are performing at a high level. The losses to the Lakers and Thunder came by only a single possession, which highlights how competitive Denver has remained against elite opposition.

Injuries have also played a role in shaping the team’s recent form. Peyton Watson has been sidelined with a hamstring injury suffered in early February, an issue that has kept him out for several weeks during a key stretch of the season. Reports indicate that Watson is approaching a return, with a potential timeline pointing toward early to mid March or shortly after, which could provide a boost to Denver’s rotation.

Watson’s absence has impacted Denver’s wing depth and defensive structure, as he plays an important role on both ends of the court. His return would add scoring, perimeter defense, and energy to a roster that already features strong offensive production.

5. Cleveland Cavaliers

Cleveland rounds out the top five. The Cavaliers have been less consistent than the four teams above them, but they still have enough talent to remain a serious challenger. Their last three results include a 130-120 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, a 138-105 win over the Mavericks, and a 128-122 loss to the Orlando Magic.

That run shows both the opportunity and the concern around Cleveland. The blowout win in Dallas highlighted the team’s ceiling, especially when Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and James Harden are producing together. The losses to Dallas and Orlando show that form still needs to settle. Even so, Cleveland remains a favorite because the core has scoring, size, and postseason-level talent. At +1600, the Cavaliers sit a tier below the top four, but they still belong on the shortlist.

The futures board currently says the road to the NBA title runs through Oklahoma City, with Boston, San Antonio, Denver, and Cleveland all close enough to shape the race. Those odds reflect recent form, roster quality, and the ability to handle pressure when the season tightens. For more on the NBA and other leagues, check out our Sports page.
