WESTCHESTER COUNTY TO STUDY SOLAR INSTALLATION AT CROTON POINT PARK PARKING LOT

Feasibility Review Will Assess Energy Production and Cost Savings

Westchester County is moving forward with a preliminary study to assess the feasibility of installing a solar photovoltaic system at the Croton Point Park main parking lot in Croton-on-Hudson. Solar photovoltaic systems utilize parking lot canopies to provide a renewable energy source to meet nearby needs. The study will determine the site’s capacity to support a solar canopy system, EV charging stations and evaluate projected energy production and financial performance.

The consultant will measure the site, estimate system size and analyze anticipated electric generation over multiple timeframes. The study will also consider how power produced at the site could be utilized and provide preliminary cost estimates and financial projections. The preliminary study is being conducted by American Solar Partners LLC.

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “We are committed to pursuing smart infrastructure solutions that reduce emissions and position Westchester for a more sustainable future. This study represents a proactive step in evaluating how County properties can contribute to our clean energy goals.”

Westchester County Director of Energy Conservation and Sustainability Peter L. McCartt said: “A detailed feasibility assessment allows us to make informed decisions rooted in data and long-term planning. It ensures that any future investment aligns with both environmental objectives and fiscal responsibility.”

New York State Senator Pete Harckham said: “Solar energy is now the most affordable source of power, and it is essential that we continue expanding our infrastructure to deliver long-term energy savings to our residents. Installing solar arrays over public parking lots is a practical and efficient solution that brings additional clean energy online without disrupting the everyday use of these spaces. I commend Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins for advancing this forward-thinking initiative at Croton Point Park.”

New York State Assemblymember Dana Levenberg said: “I know from experience that parking lots make excellent sites for solar arrays. We need more of these projects, and I applaud Westchester County for moving forward with a feasibility study at Croton Point Park. I look forward to seeing the results and continuing to partner with the County on clean energy initiatives that help us lower emissions and costs for residents.”

Westchester County Legislator Emiljana Ulaj said: “We need to build boldly on renewable energy generation in order to reduce utility costs, and local governments need to lead the way. I want to see solar on every municipal owned parking lot, on every government building, on every school rooftop. Building solar boldly is how we help families afford their electric bill every month. I am so grateful to County Executive Ken Jenkins for having the vision to invest in solar energy and do our part to relieve the demand on the power grid. This unique project at Croton Point Park will hopefully serve to inspire a lot of others to follow suit.”

The County anticipates the study will clarify whether the proposed installation should advance to the next phase of development. If feasible, the project could enhance renewable energy generation, offset energy costs and be used as a model for future County projects.
