Remembering Dara Marie Kane -Yonkers First Female City Court Judge

The people of Yonkers are remembering Dara Marie Kane, who served as Yonkers first female City Court Judge, and who recently passed away.

Mayor Mike Spano posted, “It is with deep sadness that I extend my condolences on the passing of the Honorable Dara Marie Kane, a trailblazer who made history as the first female judge of the Yonkers City Court. Her dedicated service to justice, including her work with the Yonkers Corporation Counsel’s Office, leaves a lasting legacy for our City and for generations of women who follow in her footsteps. On behalf of the City of Yonkers, I extend my heartfelt sympathies to her family, loved ones, and all those whose lives she touched.” 

The obituary reads,

It is with regret that we announce the passing of the Hon. Dara Marie Kane. She was 78 years old. She is survived by her son’s Joseph (Kerry), Thomas (Sharry), Brian (Maureen) and Brendan Johnson. Also, her grandchildren James, Elizabeth, Eamon, and Stella. Dara was preceded in passing by her parents James Francis Kane and Elizabeth Kane (nee Lavery).

Our mother was born and raised in the Bronx where she attended Saint Philip Neri School, Mother Butler Memorial High School, Fordham University, and New York Law School. She served as an Assistant District Attorney for the Bronx County, the Yonkers Corporation Counsel office, and was appointed as the first female judge on the Yonkers City Court.

A Wake was held at Whalen and Ball funeral home and Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Sacred Heart Church.

Judge Kane kept working up until her passing.

“Dara worked with MHACY until last week and the entire MHACY community is stunned and saddened by her loss. She was a tiny giant.,” said Yonkers Housing Authority (YHA) CEO Wilson Kimball.
