Program Honors Service and Connect Veterans with Companionship

In honor of Veterans Day, the City of Yonkers and the Department of Parks, Recreation & Conservation are offering free pet adoptions for veterans on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11. The initiative is designed to express gratitude to those who have served while helping connect veterans with the comfort and companionship of a loving pet.
“Service comes in many forms, and our veterans have given so much of themselves for our country,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “This small gesture is one way for us to say thank you, by helping veterans find a loyal friend and companion while giving a shelter animal a second chance at a happy home.”
“We’re proud to support our veterans through this special program,” said Parks Commissioner Steve Sansone. “Pets bring comfort, connection, and purpose. We know this will be a positive impact on both our veterans and our animals.”
Veterans who wish to participate can visit the Yonkers Animal Shelter at 1000 Ridge Hill Boulevard to meet adoptable cats and dogs. Adoption fees will be waived for all veterans who present valid military identification.
The Yonkers Animal Shelter is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information on available pets or adoption requirements, please call (914) 377-6730 .
