Stepinac Launches Community Break Periods to Strengthen Social-Emotional Learning

Stepinac is excited to announce the launch of Community Break Periods, a new initiative designed to enhance social and emotional development while fostering a stronger sense of community across the school.

Beginning this fall, Stepinac will hold an all-school break for 15 minutes each day. Students, faculty, and staff will take this daily break from the academic rigor of the day to recharge, connect, and engage in activities that promote well-being and belonging.

“Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is essential for helping students thrive both academically and personally,” said Principal, Paul Carty. “By creating intentional opportunities for connection, reflection, and skill-building, we aim to cultivate a positive and supportive environment where every member of our community feels valued and empowered.”

Vice Principal of Academics & Curriculum, Frank Portanova ’93, added: “These Community Break Periods give students and faculty a safe and supportive space to practice empathy, collaboration, and self-awareness. It’s an opportunity for our school community to come together and strengthen the connections that make Stepinac such a special place.”

Purpose and Activities Community Break Periods at Stepinac Focus on:

· Building Community: Encouraging interaction in a less structured environment to foster belonging and positive relationships.
· Practicing SEL Skills: Helping students develop self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
· Reducing Stress and Promoting Well-Being: Providing structured breaks from academic pressures to help manage stress, regulate emotions, and refocus.

Activities during these periods include club meetings, recreational activities, assemblies, mindfulness exercises, team-building games, and brain breaks.

Benefits:

· Research indicates that SEL programs enhance school climate, increase student engagement, and improve academic performance (Wallace Foundation). Stepinac’s Community Break Periods integrate SEL seamlessly into the school day, creating a holistic, supportive, and enriching environment for all.
