YONKERS MAYOR SPANO TO ESTABLISH NEW SENIOR ADVISORY BOARD

Applications Available and Accepted through September 3 at YonkersNY.gov/SAB

On August 21, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano announced the establishment of his Senior Advisory Board, which will be tasked with creating and recommending effective policies and programs to enhance the quality of life for seniors as they age in place in Yonkers. Applications are available at yonkersny.gov/SAB and local Yonkers senior centers through September 3.

“The Mayor’s Senior Advisory Board will become a dedicated channel for us to understand and address the needs of our senior population,” said Mayor Spano.  “Many of our advisory boards have already offered valuable insight and recommendations that impact the quality of life for many of our residents. With Yonkers’ senior population growing by 30% over the last decade, it is important to create another platform for us to learn and share ideas that affect this rapidly growing community.”

Members of the board must be a Yonkers resident and a senior, aged 60 or older. The Board consists of six members representing each council district and one member to serve at large. Those interested in becoming a board member can apply at yonkersny.gov/SAB. Members will be chosen and convened by Mayor Spano.

Responsibilities of the Yonkers Senior Advisory Board include:

  • Serving as a liaison between the City and various senior-related community-based organizations
  • Recommend senior programs
  • Assist in the resolution of senior issues and problems
  • Give direct input on specific challenges facing the senior population, such as housing, transportation, healthcare, and social engagement
  • Advocate and create strong connections within the senior community

Mayor Spano will accept applications today through Wednesday, September 3. The Mayor’s Senior Advisory Board joins eight other advisory boards created by Mayor Spano since 2012, many of which have implemented policies, recommendations,  special events, and employment opportunities.
