Councilwoman Pineda-Isaac Faces Alberto Velazquez in Democratic Primary -District 2

Alberto Velazquez

City Councilwoman Corazon Pineda-Isaac

Yonkers City Councilwoman Corazon Pineda-Isaac is running this year for reelection to her council seat and serve a 4th, 4-year term.

This year, Pineda-Isaac faces a tough challenge in the democratic primary in Alberto Velazquez.
Velazquez, making his first run for elected office, is a labor leader with CSEA in the Yonkers Public Schools.
A 26-year employee of the public school system, Velazquez has lived and worked in Yonkers his entire life.

Velazquez has been endorsed by the Yonkers Democratic Committee.

In a prior issue of Yonkers Rising, Yonkers Democratic Chair Tom Meier explained that the decision was based on Pineda-Isaac’s decision to run for Mayor last year and challenge Mayor Mike Spano, who was endorsed by the Yonkers Democratic Party. And after losing the democratic primary to Mayor Spano, Pineda-Isaac failed to endorse Spano for relection.

But Pineda-Isaac remains a popular, incumbent Councilwoman who has served the people of Southwest Yonkers for the past 12 years.

One question that we have for Pineda-Isaac is, you are running for a fourth term on the council. However, on both occasions when the extension of term limits was brought to the council for a vote, she voted against it. So you voted no on term limits for a third term and for a fourth term, but now you want to serve as Councilwoman for a fourth term?

Velazquez recently held a fundraiser at the home of Nick Spano, which was attended by many Yonkers democrats.

We take no position on this election. We wish both candidates the best of luck, and we will leave it up to the voters. We wanted to highlight this race for our readers before Early Voting starts on June 13.
