At Mount Vernon High School, two seniors received heartfelt surprises ahead of two significant milestones —prom and graduation —thanks to the generosity of Christine Vargas-Lane. Inspired by her daughter, who was disabled in a car accident and didn’t have the chance to experience these milestones, Ms. Vargas-Lane chose to honor her daughter’s dreams by giving back to students who have shown resilience in the face of adversity.
Amina Sohna, a senior who has overcome academic challenges to become a successful student, was gifted a $200 gift card. With graduation just a month away, this gesture recognizes her perseverance and hard work.
Kamora Alston, another senior, received two tickets to a Beyoncé concert to enjoy with her mother. Kamora is a standout student — an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate, high-achieving scholar, and manager of the girls’ basketball team. Her journey required personal sacrifices, as did her mother’s, who was a teenage parent. Ms. Vargas-Lane, also a teen mother herself, saw a reflection of her own story in theirs and wanted to reward their dedication with a joyful experience.
“These young women have shown incredible strength and determination,” said Ms. Vargas-Lane. “We have to nurture those dreams. We can’t stop listening, and we can’t stop supporting them.” She encouraged the scholars to be “great on purpose.”
Through these donations, Ms. Vargas-Lane not only honors her daughter but also reinforces the importance of community support. Her actions remind us that when we come together to uplift one another, we create a stronger, more compassionate world — one student at a time.
