Drums, Unity, and Youthful Excellence Fill Getty Square, Yonkers

By: Dennis Richmond, Jr.

The sound of rhythmic drumming, synchronized steps, and the powerful energy of young performers filled Getty Square on Saturday afternoon, as the Marching Cobras — proudly known as “the Tri-State’s Number 1 Drum Line” — transformed the heart of downtown Yonkers into a stage of precision, pride, and community.

On May 24th, 2025, approximately 4:15 p.m., the Marching Cobras were in full force, stationed by Designer Optical and Dunkin’ Donuts. What began as an ordinary afternoon quickly shifted as the group’s vibrant beats and choreography captivated passersby and drew a swelling crowd of spectators, residents, and supporters.

The performance was more than a display of musical and physical talent — it was a declaration. Against the backdrop of national concerns about youth violence and negative stereotypes, the Marching Cobras offered a powerful counter-narrative: one of discipline, creativity, and unity.

Founded by Terrel Stowers, the Marching Cobras have built a reputation for excellence across the Tri-State area. Their performances blend traditional marching band elements with modern choreography, highlighting the performers’ dedication to their art and to each other.

As the crowd cheered and filmed with their phones, some even danced along — a spontaneous reminder of the power of the arts to bring people together.

Getty Square has long served as a hub for Yonkers life, but for one afternoon, it became something more: a place of celebration, of positive youth representation, and of unapologetic Black excellence.
