The New York Game Author Kevin Baker on Beyond the Game

Host John Vorperian, left with author Kevin Baker

BEYOND THE GAME, White Plains Community Media, features an interview with Kevin Baker, author of THE NEW YORK GAME: Baseball and the Rise of a New City. Baker makes the clear and riveting case in his latest book that Baseball is “the New York game”.

Starting from the 1820s up to 1946, the Big Apple had a continuing influence upon the sport. In New York, the first baseball diamond was laid out, the bunt and curveball were invented, the home run became king. The first professional sports league was birthed here. Each ethnic group stepping off Ellis Island embraced the game.

“In reading Kevin’s book, I was amazed at how many times through the decades Tammany Hall, New York politicos and fixers manipulated and swayed the livelihood of owners, and players alike.” said BEYOND THE GAME’S host, John Vorperian.

Kevin Baker is a novelist, historian and journalist who began his writing career at age 13 covering high school sports for the Gloucester Daily Times. He has author or co-author over a dozen books, including Reggie Jackson’s Becoming Mr. October.
