As former President Donald Trump scored a decisive victory over Vice-President Kamala Harris on Election Night 2024, and won the popular vote across the country, voters in Yonkers reelected democrats Nader Sayegh to the Assembly and Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Shelley Mayer to the State Senate, and also elected Susan Cacace Westchester District Attorney.

The most competitive race was for Assembly in the 90th District, where Sayegh faced a spirited challenge from republican John Isaac. The final tally had Sayegh defeating Isaac by double digits, 56%-44%.

“I am proud and honored to announce that I have been overwhelming re-elected to New York State Assembly District 90 in a mandate! This election was a victory for all of Yonkers. The voters sent a strong message that they will not be fooled by the typical fear mongering playbook. I was proud of the campaign that I ran focusing on the issues that matter most- safety, quality of life, and funding for our beautiful and diverse communities,” said Sayegh.

“I would like to thank the labor unions, elected officials, and organizations that supported our campaign and made this victory possible. In addition, I would like to thank every donor and volunteer who played a crucial role in getting the message across to the voters. Thank you Yonkers and the voters of the 90th district for your faith in me,” said Sayegh.

Another important vote for Yonkers residents and all New Yorkers on Nov. 5 was the vote on Proposition One, which has strong support and opposition on both sides of the issue, and which was used by supporters as a way to ensure abortion rights in NY, while opponents said it could mean boys will be able to play in girls high school sports and illegal migrants would be given more rights and benefits. Prop One passed in Westchester, 68%-32%, and statewide 62%-38%.

A second proposition in Westchester, which would have extended the term of county legislators from 2 to 4 years, failed 57%-43%.

State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins was reelected by a 66%-34% margin over Khris Kerr. “New Yorkers have once again re-elected one of the largest Democratic majorities in State Senate history. Today, with the passage of Proposition 1, New Yorkers have made their voices heard in a powerful call for abortion access, equal rights, and protections for all,” said Stewart-Cousins.

State Senator Shelley Mayer was also reelected, defeating republican Tricia Lindsay, 62%-38%.

In the race for Westchester District Attorney, democrat Susan Cacace defeated republican John Sarcone, 64%-36%.

Five democratic candidates for State Supreme Court also cruised to election, beating the republican judicial candidates by 130,000 votes.
