NEW ROCHELLE PUBLIC LIBRARY CELEBRATES HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Jhoely Garay

Nelson Riveros

The New Rochelle Public Library is proud to announce a series of enriching events in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month featuring music, cultural arts, and literary programs for both children and adults.

On Friday, September 20, 7:00 pm, our Friday Night Concert Series kicks off with a sizzling performance by the Nelson Riveros Quartet! Enjoy a mix of musical styles from different parts of Latin America  – from the sway of Cuban boleros, the pulsating beat of Colombian cumbias, the passion of mambo, to the energy of Afro-Cuban jazz, and the romance of Brazilian bossa nova – all in one unforgettable evening. Plus, enjoy Nelson’s original compositions blending traditional and contemporary styles. Registration requested at bit.ly/NRPL_Riveros_Sep2024

On Tuesday, September 24, 12:00 pm,  the NRPL Brown Bag Book Club will engage in a discussion of Olga Dies Dreaming by Latina author Xochitl Gonzalez. Set against the backdrop of New York City in the months surrounding the most devastating hurricane in Puerto Rico’s history, Olga Dies Dreaming is a story that examines political corruption, familial strife and the very notion of the American dream–all while asking what it really means to weather a storm. All welcome. Drop in.

On Saturday, October 5, 2:00 pm, the library is kicking off its Saturday Afternoon Concert Series with a Mexican jazz concert with Jhoely Garay and friends. Jhoely is a New York-based guitarist, composer, arranger and educator from Mexico City, Mexico, whose music expresses her passion for straight-ahead swing, contemporary jazz, and music and rhythms from Latin America. Registration requested at bit.ly/MexicanJazz_10_2024

On Wednesday, October 9, 11:00 am, enjoy a virtual presentation about three Spanish artists – the twin giants of 16th and 17th Spanish painting, El Greco and Diego Velázquez, and the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Francisco de Goya. Presented by Robin Hoffman and Jodi Stiffelman of ArtScapades. Registration required at bit.ly/NRPL_Titans_Oct2024.

The library’s Hispanic Heritage Month programs continue with a virtual program,  Frida Kahlo: Dreams, Demons, and Devotion on Tuesday, October 15, 7:00 pm. Frida Kahlo’s paintings illustrate the anguish and passion of a fascinating, complicated personal and artistic life. In this program, the astonishing works of this Mexican and feminist icon will be looked at through the lens of her ethnicity, disabilities, and political activism, especially emphasizing her engagement with the natural world. Presented by Art Educator Janet Mandel. Registration required at bit.ly/FridaKahlo_10_2024

On Thursday, October 17, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, drop in for our monthly Art Workshop for Adults. This month participants will discover Picasso’s Cubist portrait techniques in this hands-on-workshop, learning how to transform ordinary images into unique works of art.

All programs take place at the New Rochelle Public Library, 1 Library Plaza, New Rochelle and are free and open to all.
