The City of Yonkers kicked off its annual Pride Weekend with a vibrant display of solidarity on Friday, as the LGBTQ+ Flag soared high in front of City Hall. The Flag Raising Ceremony, a symbolic gesture of inclusion and celebration, drew a diverse crowd eager to honor the LGBTQ+ community.
Amidst cheers and applause, Angelique Piwinski received the prestigious Michael Sabatino Legacy Award, recognizing her tireless advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights. The podium witnessed impassioned speeches from community stalwarts like Anthony Nicodemo and Brentin Brown-Beausoleil, who led a poignant moment of silence. Michael Sabatino, echoing the sentiments of many, urged the younger generation to cherish and learn from their history.
This year holds particular significance as it marks the 55th anniversary of the modern LGBTQ+ civil rights movement, ignited by the defiant actions of Marsha P. Johnson at the Stonewall Inn. The historic Stonewall Riot of 1969 catalyzed a movement that continues to inspire progress and change.
Mayor Mike Spano’s visionary leadership paved the way for Yonkers’ LGBTQ+ community with the establishment of the LGBTQ Advisory Board in 2014. Committed to advocating for inclusive policies, the board stands as a beacon of hope and progress.
As the flag fluttered in the breeze, anticipation mounted for the 7th Annual Yonkers Pride Festival on June 8th, 2024, set to electrify Downtown Yonkers. From Shay D’Pines to Angel Elektra, a stellar lineup promises a day of celebration and empowerment.
Behind the scenes, the Yonkers Pride Board’s dedicated planning committee, led by luminaries like Robert Voorheis and Jessika Pineda, worked tirelessly to ensure a memorable and inclusive event. With acts like Xunami Muse ready to grace the stage, the festival is poised to be a testament to the city’s vibrant LGBTQ+ community.
As the rainbow flag flies high over Yonkers, it serves as a reminder of the city’s unwavering commitment to diversity, equality, and love. In the words of Mayor Spano, “Yonkers Pride is more than a festival; it’s a testament to our shared humanity and the strength of our community.”
