Will the Jets and Giants Be Any Better Next Year

High expectations surrounded the Big Apple as the 2023 NFL season kicked off, possibly more than ever in recent history. Despite a mere combined playoff victory over the last decade, most if not all NY sportsbooks expected both the Giants and Jets to be in the postseason mix, if not vying for a Super Bowl. However, the aspirations formed during the offseason have yet to materialize.

The Jets faced a major setback as prized acquisition Aaron Rodgers succumbed to a severe injury after a mere four plays, thrusting much-maligned former first-round pick Zach Wilson into the spotlight. Meanwhile, the Giants suffered a humiliating 40-0 defeat in their prime-time home opener, with their 2022 stars struggling to replicate previous successes in subsequent games.

The question arises: which of MetLife Stadium’s struggling teams has been more disappointing in 2023, and, crucially, which one has a better chance of staging a comeback for a potential playoff run? Let’s delve into the analysis.

Who’s more disappointing: Giants or Jets?

The extent of disappointment may pivot on how one assesses Aaron Rodgers’ injury. While undoubtedly a significant blow to the Jets’ season, it was somewhat beyond their control. In contrast, the Giants entered the season on the back of a Divisional Round playoff bid, with high-profile additions to both offense and defense. Despite early-season injuries to key players, the Giants have significantly underperformed, ranking among the lowest in various metrics.

To put it in perspective, the Giants have struggled to score points, ranking worse than even the struggling Bears. Their offensive line, one of the worst in terms of sacks surrendered, has contributed to a historic point differential in first halves. The Giants’ defense, led by Wink Martindale, has been insufficient in preserving leads, and they have been blown out in three of their four matchups. In summary, while the Jets endured the disappointment of Rodgers’ loss, the Giants have been the more consistently disappointing team in the 2023 season.

Who’s more likely to rebound: Giants or Jets?

Assessing the potential for a rebound, the path ahead seems more favorable for the Jets. Despite losing their star quarterback, the Jets boast superior talent on both offense and defense, including reigning Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year. Despite Zach Wilson facing criticism, Daniel Jones has more turnovers through four games. The Jets’ schedule, while challenging, is not as daunting as the Giants’, and they have shown competitiveness in games against strong opponents.

The Jets, led by coach Robert Saleh, seem better positioned to remain relevant late in the season. While a return from Aaron Rodgers could alter the narrative, the Jets appear more likely to contend, possibly for a wild-card spot, especially considering the precedent set by the Ravens with a backup quarterback in the previous year’s playoffs. The Giants, facing a tougher schedule and struggling on multiple fronts, have a steeper hill to climb for a late-season resurgence.
