Yonkers has many “hidden heroes” who serve their communities without any fanfare or desire for credit. Lucy Moreno-Casanova is one of those true public servants and an intergral part in making sure that the people of Yonkers have gardens in their neighborhoods.

Moreno-Casanova was recentlyh recognized for her outstanding work managing the Yonkers Family YMCA’s 12 community gardens across the city.

A Garden Party was held to celebrate the work of Lucy and her volunteers. The Community Garden Program works to grow food, but also runs neighborhood clean-ups, provides fresh produce for families in need, and offers education and volunteer opportunities for our youth.

County Legislator Symra Brandon presented a proclamation to Lucy Moreno-Casanova for advocating for community gardens in southwest Yonkers for over twenty years. “Through the gardening experience, many families and individuals have learned how to cultivate plots of land and provide food for their families. Lucy, who is an advocate for her community, started her project with the Greyston Foundation and is now working with the YMCA of Yonkers. Many of her volunteers started working in the Garden as children and now are college students. Discipline, respect and responsibility have taught many volunteers how to negotiate life skills and grow plants and vegetables,” said Brandon.

The people in the neighborhoods where Lucy makes a difference know what a treasure she is. And even though you might not care Lucy, you have a lot of friends in Yonkers who appreicate you and wanted to say congratulations, and thanks for your service to the people of Yonkers.
