On August 20, Yonkers City Councilman Anthony Merante sponsored a back to school book bag giveaway at Boo Wilson Park. The event was organized by WWR Inc., Kings On Assignment and Bronx Visionary in cooperation with Westchester County Legislator (Majority Leader) Christopher A. Johnson. This year’s drive was to honor of the late Justin Robinson affectionately known as “Boogs” to his family and friends around the Runyon Heights community and all over Yonkers. He tragically lost his life in a car accident but in his everlasting spirit donated his organs saving up to 12 lives. His giving will continue to manifest through this event. Yonkers Councilman Anthony Merante stated. “When I was approached by the organizers to sponsor the 1ST ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL BOOK BAG GIVEAWAY, I said most definitely count me in. With rising Inflation cutting into Yonkers families pocketbooks leaving little money to spare helping families with book bags and school supplies was a small way to ease their financial burden” Saturday’s event at Boo Wilson Park drew about 250 people. over 100 book bags and back to school essentials were given away. Merante noted, “It was a fun day for all with food, music by a DJ, Italian Ices, the Exquisite Force dance troop and even our great Yonkers Fire Dept brought a truck out for kids to explore. It was nice seeing our Runyon Heights community out especially Lamont (Mel) Robinson Sr. and Carrie Ann Robinson. I like to thank the event organizers for an awesome job and especially Dwayne Cloud. I’m looking forward to next year’s event that we can make even bigger and better.”
