YPIE Students Win Prestigious Science Research Awards at Regeneron WESEF 2022

YPIE Students Yoselin, Malak, Autumn, Tanya, Jaden, and Zowie (not pictured) win awards at Regeneron WESEF.

For the first time, six Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) students from across the Yonkers Public Schools, were recognized with awards at Regeneron WESEF, one of the most competitive and prestigious science and engineering fairs in the country.

WESEF, the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair, offers high school students from Westchester and Putnam counties an opportunity to present their research to scientists, business leaders, and the general public.

On March 19th, 11 YPIE Regeneron Science Research Scholars from four different high schools represented Yonkers at WESEF. They presented their original research projects along with nearly 700 of Westchester’s best and brightest young scientists.

These students’ research covered a range of topics including:

* A Novel Natural Language Processing Approach for Analyzing Lengthy Terms & Condition Agreements
* Birth Worker Bias in Emergency Decision Making
* Feeding a Community through Hydroponics on the Science Barge

YPIE students were honored to receive the following awards:
* Jaden: 2nd Place Award for Computer Science
* Yoselin: Honorable Mention Award for Behavioral and Social Sciences
* Malak and Zowie: Leason Ellis Team Project Award
* Jaden and Tanya & Autumn (team project): Creative Approach to Research Award

Jake Schofield, YPIE Regeneron Science Research Director, was also recognized with the Best WESEF Forms and Paperwork Award, for ensuring students submitted accurate paperwork that made the review process easier.

Through a long-time partnership with Regeneron, YPIE’s rigorous Science Research Institute enables more than 50 Yonkers students in 10th through 12th grades to conduct their own in-depth research and present their findings at local and national conferences.

The YPIE community looks forward to watching as these young scientists continue to make a positive impact on our world.
