Assemblymember Shelley Mayer held her second annual Women’s History Month celebration March 23, when she honored five outstanding women for their significant contributions to their community.
The honorees included: Mary Hoar, president emerita of the Yonkers Historical Society; Andrea Brown, president of the Yonkers NAACP; Lucia Alfano, founding president of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses Westchester; Melvina Lathan, director of youth services at the Yonkers Police Athletic League; and Maria Abdullah, co-leader for the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom, Westchester 1 chapter.
Each of the honorees noted how poignant it was to have a women’s event honoring women, hosted by an outstanding woman and public servant.
Each of the honorees was presented with a New York State resolution recognizing their achievements, and a book, “The Women Who Made New York” by Julie Scelfo.
