Putnam County Legislator Carl Albano filed paperwork in Dec. of 2021 to run for Putnam County Executive this year (2022), but the news didn’t hit the press until Jan. 1 of 2022. Albano has served the resident of Putnam County’s 5th District, which includes the Eastern half of Lake Carmel, the Hamlet of Carmel and the western side of the Town of Patterson, since 2011. He also is the owner-operator of the Albano Agency Insurance & Real Estate firm, based in Mahopac.
“As a Putnam County resident for over 50 years, I know quite well what makes this county so great. Having a decade of experience as legislator has given me a deep understanding of county government and a clear vision of where county government should be. As county executive, I will put my heart into doing what it takes to move Putnam into the future,” said Albano, who experience in Putnam County government includes serving as the Chairman of the County Legislature.
In several media interviews, Albano touted his record on the county board of “elminating short-term debt,” and keeping a high bond rating for the county, which translates into lower borrowing costs and interest rates. Albano said his goal was “lowering taxes and possibly providing more services.”
And as a business owner in Putnam, Albano said that he would work “to support quality commercial growth in Putnam and grow the commercial tax based to offset residential property taxes.”
Albano is a republican, and so is the other announced candidate for Putnam County Executive, Assemblyman Kevin Byrne. Byrne made his announcement last year, and he must give up his assembly seat to run for Putnam County Executive.
Byrne is also one of most well known and respected elected officials in Putnam. A republican primary between Byrne and Albano is expected to be a great contest, with Albano representing the Old Guard of Putnam Republicans and Byrne a part of the next generation of the Putnam GOP.
The current Putnam County Executive, Mary Ellen Odell, is term limited from running again next year, making this contest an open seat. No democrat has yet to announce.
For those of us who live in Northern Westchester, the races for Putnam County Executive, and for Assembly in the 94th District, which includes Northern Westchester and Putnam, are important because of the close proximity and the fact that many N. Westchester residents, shop and dine frequently in Putnam.
