Yonkers Finance Commissioner John Liszewski Updates BOE on Ransomware-Hack: “Everything is Affected”

Yonkers Finance Commissioner John Liszewski

During his month budget review with the Yonkers Board of Education, Yonkers Finance Commissioner John Liszewski reviewed the recent hack by a cybercriminal demanding a ransom.

“The city has been the victim of a ransomware attack, last Friday (Sept. 10). We are still struggling to get our computer systems up and running, but we have sucessfully paid two payrolls for the Yonkers Public Schools and the Board of Education. The ransomware attack is delaying things and affecting all of our operations, including purchasing and payroll. An upcoming audit has been delayed and everything is affected. The good news is that we didn’t pay the ransom and our IT department was able to stop it,” said Liszewski, who added that the personal data of Yonkers taxpayers were not stolen.

“Ransom attacks come from people who are not interested in stealing data, but shutting down your system and have you pay a ransom. That is why everything is being delayed. “
