Mayor Mike Spano recently present a proclamation to Sam Riti, commander of AMETS Post 40, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the 7th Ward War Memorial Monument, located in Yonkers on Park Hill Avenue. This memorial commemorates the lives of Yonkers residents from
Park Hill who died for our country.
Fifty-nine names are on the memorial – 14 from World War I, 42 from World War II, three from Korea and one from Vietnam. Riti recalled the dedication of the memorial, which took place in October 1959.
“The neighborhood held a big rally to replace the smaller stone that was there,” he said. “They held raffles and fundraisers to pay for the monument, and first prize was a Cadillac. If you didn’t want the Caddy, you could take a $3,000 cash prize.
This memorial is a lasting memory honoring the boys from this neighborhood
