On Dec. 2, eight Westchester democrats endorsed Governor Kathy Hochul for re-election next year. Three of Westchester’s big city Mayor’s, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson and White Plains Mayor Tom Roach, and five Assemblymembers, Amy Paulin, Nader Sayegh, Steve Otis, Chris Burdick and Sandy Galef, all praised Governor Hochul’s work over the past three months in tackling the challenges of the pandemic, strengthening New York’s economy, and restoring trust in government.

“I am thrilled to receive the endorsement of these dedicated public officials who share my commitment to ensuring government works for everyone,” said Governor Kathy Hochul. “From combating the pandemic to building a more inclusive economy, I look forward to working hand-in-hand with leaders in Rockland, Westchester, and across our state to keep New York moving in the right direction.”

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said, “Kathy Hochul is leading New York forward. In just a few short months, Governor Hochul stepped up, hit the ground running and demonstrated her ability to govern effectively and with purpose, especially during such turbulent and uncertain times. Given a full term, I am confident the governor will continue to work collaboratively with other state and local leaders and enact a positive agenda that benefits Yonkers, Westchester County and all those who call New York home.”

Assemblymember Amy Paulin said, “I endorse Governor Kathy Hochul as governor for New York State. Since taking the helm just a few months ago, she has taken wise and decisive action on issues ranging from COVID relief, the environment, infrastructure development and gun control, to women’s issues. She has traveled throughout the state more than any other elected official that I‘ve seen, listens to residents’ concerns, and has implemented legislation and solutions with compassion, common sense and transparency. I’m convinced she can bridge the current divides in our state, restore trust in the governor’s office, and will fight for all New Yorkers.”

Assemblymember Nader Sayegh said, “Governor Kathy Hochul, for the past six years, has traveled our great state to learn and engage in the challenges facing working families, small businesses and the issues confronting every New Yorker. I appreciate the governor’s support for crime prevention and gun control legislation, paired with job training and anti-violence programs for our youth. I applaud and endorse her for governor for understanding the value and contributions of diverse communities like Yonkers.”

Assemblymember Steve Otis said, “In her first months as governor, Kathy Hochul has set a high bar: state government must be more effective at addressing issues of importance to New Yorkers. Her sense of urgency and energy is informed by service at every level of government and deep knowledge of every corner of our state. The governor is a longtime friend whom I have seen connect with New Yorkers in Buffalo, New York City, upstate and in Westchester. She has already brought her new vision to state government. Our aspirations for a more caring and successful New York will be best served with Kathy Hochul’s re-election as governor.”

Assemblymember Chris Burdick, said, “Governor Hochul has hit the ground running, making decisive and wise decisions in her appointments and her policies. She handles government deftly, but also in a compassionate, inclusive, and collaborative manner that allows all voices to be heard. She is and will continue to be excellent for Westchester County and the State of New York.”

Assemblymember Sandy Galef said,“Governor Hochul has done an exceptional job assuming the position of Governor of New York and it is my hope that she will continue in that office in the years to follow. I have worked with the governor for many years on issues that were important to our residents. She has visited my assembly district often, has engaged in state budget discussions locally, and has been a state official that is very accessible to other elected officials as well as the public. I urge others to support Governor Hochul and keep her working for us.”

New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson said, “Governor Hochul has hit the ground running and demonstrated exceptional leadership on the critical challenges and priorities facing New York State. Whether confronting the climate crisis, promoting economic growth and opportunity, restoring confidence in public service, or taking decisive action to address the COVID pandemic, we can count on Governor Hochul to be a committed champion for all New Yorkers, and a trusted partner for cities like mine.”

White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach said, “I am happy to announce my endorsement of Governor Kathy Hochul. She took office during a trying time for our state, and has worked tirelessly to bring stability and leadership, ensuring New York will emerge from these difficult days stronger than ever. I am pleased to give her my full endorsement.”

According to our democratic sources, the gathering of support for Gov. Hochul from Westcheter came about quickly, due in part because of an expected announcement next week that Westchester County Executive George Latimer will be named a candidate for Lt. Governor as NYAG and Gubernatorial candidate Letitia James’ running mate.

Also notable is who is staying away from an endorsement for now in Westchester. They include: State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, State Senator Shelley Mayer and Westchester District Attorney Mimi Rocah, and democratic senior statespeople Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Nita Lowey.

With Hocul popular in upstate NY, and James popular in New York City, some believe that the suburbs, and Westchester County could play a role in who wins the democratic primary for Governor in June 2022.
