It’s not official, but Sound Shore Democrats contacted us over the weekend to tell us that they expect State Senator Alessandra Biaggi to announce that she is running for Congress in the newly redrawn 3rd district, which will include parts of Long Island and parts of lower Westchester.

californiatargetbook.com, a company that monitors new website address names, reported that on Feb. 3, the name alessandrabiaggi4congress.com was registered.

Biaggi is very popular in her State Senate district, and will be running in an open seat, because Congressman Tom Suozzi is running for Governor. Sen. Biaggi also has received the support of Congressmember Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, AOC, and Congressman Jamaal Bowman. Both could help her secure the progressive wing of the democratic party.

Sources also tell us that several prominent Westchester democrats are lined up to endorse Biaggi’s run for Congress. Sen. Biaggi’s grandfather, Mario Biaggi, served as a Bronx Congressman for decades.

Biaggi defeated State Senator Jeff Klein in 2018. Within her first two months in office, Senator Biaggi chaired the first public hearings in 27 years on sexual harassment in the workplace, and led the charge in New York to pass legislation that strengthens protections for survivors and holds employers accountable for addressing sexual misconduct.

The new congressional boundaries of the 3rd district are unique to New York, with both Long Island and Westchester joined together to make up NY-3. No word yet on any Long Island democrat interested in running for Biaggi’s seat, or who will replace Biaggi in her 34th District, which includes the Bronx neighborhoods of Throgs Neck, and Pelham Bay, and the Westchester Town of Pelham and parts of Mt. Vernon.
