Making it in Westchester: Dam Good English Muffins

Denise Weale, at the Croton Dam, with her Dam Good English Muffins

By Dan Murphy

If you grew up in Westchester like I did, you can usually find, and enjoy, a good bagel for breakfast. But another treat for me in the morning has always been an English Muffin, of which good, home made ones are hard to find in this area, forcing most of us to buy that famous brand in the supermarket.

But we have found a good English Muffin made here in Westchester. Make that a Dam Good English Muffin, the name of the company that bakes these and other delicacies in Peekskill.

And the spelling of Dam is correct. The owners, Denise & Ross Weale, started baking their sourdough English Muffins in Croton on Hudson, next to or near the Croton Dam, thus the Dam Good Muffins. Legend has it that the reason why Bagels, Breads and Pizza dough in New York City are so delicious is because of the water, and that water comes from the Croton Dam.

Founded in 2017, Dam Good English Muffins are “Handmade for Goodness Sake!” by Johnson & Wales Culinary School graduates Denise & Ross Weale, They are available in 4 varieties: vegan Original White, vegan Cinnamon Swirl, Whole Wheat & vegan Multigrain, and are made without any preservatives from premium ingredients.

On November 7, 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, the Weale’s cut the ribbon on their new bakery production facility located at 2 John Walsh Blvd., in Peekskill.

So what makes these English Muffins so Dam Good? They are made with all-natural, non-GMO, soy-free ingredients, no preservatives, and a blend of starters–which gives them a mild sourdough aroma and taste. After a cold-fermentation period, the artisan sourdough English muffins are first cut, then griddled like pancakes with avocado oil–making every one different.

When toasted, Dam Good™ English Muffins have a crispy outside and chewy inside, making them great for avocado or hummus toasts, burgers, eggs Benedict, breakfast sandwiches, melts, pizzas, or simply with butters, cheeses, or jam.

Or just with your morning coffee, which is how I tried my first Dam Good English Muffin. I got a four pack of their different flavors, to share with my wife and daughter. I toasted a Cinnamon Swirl with some butter, and it was the best English Muffin I have had, and better that some of the local, homemade bialy’s that I have been eating lately.

The Dam Good English Muffin, to me, was a true treat, and my wife enjoyed the square shape, and the center does remain soft, while toasted on the outside. Next up will be a pair of English Muffin Pizza’s which we are fans of, and can’t wait to try a Dam Good one.

I can certainly recommend this product, for several reasons. The most obvious is the taste, they are to die for, and while a four pack goes for $6, its worth it. You are also buying a local product and helping the Westchester economy at the same time.

Orders can be placed on the website, damgoodenglishmuffins.com, where they have variety packs, breakfast bags, and jams. There’s recipies and a blog with some tasty ideas for different ways to prepare your English Muffins.
Dam Good™ English Muffins are also available at various retail locations in the NY-Metro area, and via home delivery services, Fresh Direct, Hudson Milk Company, Field Goods, Headwater Food Hub, and Two Birds Artisan Provisions.
