The Charter School of Educational Excellence in Yonkers’ Owls middle school boys’ basketball team is currently 14-0. The team recently competed in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Tournament hosted by New Castle – and won.
The Owls competed against some of the most talented teams in Westchester and Connecticut, including Somers, Sleepy Hollow, Newtown, Conn., and New Castle. At the end, the Owls defeated New Castle in the championship 35-31 in come-from-behind fashion.
The Owls have been led by eighth-grade leadership from Taj Walters, Chase Howard and Emamoke Rogers, who were named MVP and All-Tournament members, respectively. Coaches Ryan Settler and Jermey Chaitin attributed the team’s historic success this season to the leadership, high character and work ethic of the team members.
“These kids come to work every day with a growth mindset,” said Settler. “They hold each other accountable in a positive way and buy into a philosophy of teamwork.”
Athletic Director Michael DeSimone added, “While the historic 14-0 start to the season is great for the school and community, the real victory is watching these student-athletes succeed in the classroom and learn essential life values of teamwork, commitment, responsibility and accountability through an educational-based athletic program that will prepare them for real-world success.”
